Today, we’re covering a common question: Why won’t leaves unfurl on houseplants? I’ll share 10 reasons why leaves might get stuck and what to do to help them unfurl.

It’s always exciting to see a new leaf form. For example, on my Arrowhead plant, I spotted a new leaf that hadn’t opened yet. It’s thrilling to witness new growth, but after two or three weeks without unfurling, it can be concerning.

Plants prone to this issue include Monsteras, the Philodendron family, Pothos, Bird of Paradise, and Syngonium (Arrowhead plants). Often, you just need patience, but if it takes too long, it could be due to one of the following reasons.

First, avoid manually unfurling the leaf! The tender new tissue can easily bruise, leading to permanent yellowing or browning. It’s best to let the plant open naturally.

Now, the 10 reasons leaves may not unfurl:

  1. Low Humidity
If your home is below 45% humidity, mist your plant or move it to a more humid location. A hygrometer can help measure humidity levels.

  2. Insufficient Moisture
New leaves need a steady supply of moisture. Ensure the soil is moist but not soggy using a moisture meter.

  3. Too Much Moisture (Root Rot)
Overwatering can kill roots, preventing water delivery to new leaves. Look out for root rot signs and treat immediately.

  4. Insufficient Light
Without enough light, plants can’t photosynthesize properly, stalling leaf growth.

  5. Too Much Light
Overexposure can stress plants, cause sunburn, or shock them. Transition to brighter light gradually if needed.

  6. Temperature Extremes
Conditions below 65°F or above 85°F can stress plants. Use a hygrometer to monitor temperature and humidity.

  7. Lack of Nutrients
Nutrient deficiencies slow growth. Fertilizers like Perky Plant with mycorrhizae can boost root health and leaf development.

  8. Repotting or Needing New Soil
Old, depleted soil or salt buildup can stunt growth. Repotting or replacing soil helps refresh nutrients.

  9. Pests
Pests love tender new leaves. Check closely using a hand lens for signs of insects

FAQ: Why Leaves Won’t Unfurl on Houseplants

Why do new leaves sometimes stay curled for weeks?

It’s normal for new leaves to take two to three weeks to unfurl, but prolonged curling could indicate environmental or care-related issues.

Should I manually help a leaf unfurl?

No, manually unfurling can damage tender new leaf tissue, causing yellow or brown spots. It’s best to let the leaf open naturally.

How does humidity affect leaf unfurling?

Low humidity levels can delay unfurling. Aim for above 45% humidity and mist your plant regularly to maintain moisture.

Can watering problems cause leaves not to open?

Yes, both under-watering and over-watering (leading to root rot) can prevent new leaves from developing properly.

Do pests cause issues with new leaf growth?

Yes, pests target tender new leaves, potentially causing them to remain curled. Check carefully with a hand lens for pest presence.
