Today, we have a plant spotlight featuring the lovely Red Congo Philodendron. I absolutely love this plant—it’s so eye-catching in the indoor garden. The leaves are naturally shiny, which is rare in houseplants, and the red coloring is stunning. The hues vary as the plant matures: some leaves are lighter green turning to darker green, and some feature red tones that gradually fade into green. It’s truly enjoyable to watch this plant develop over time.
The Red Congo is one of many cultivars hybridized by philodendron growers in recent years. Its botanical name is Philodendron tatei ‘Congo Rojo’—“Rojo” meaning red in Spanish. This plant originates from South America.
Other common names include Rojo Philodendron, Congo Rojo, and Red Congo. It is a hybrid between Philodendron Imperial Red and Philodendron Tatei. Other similar philodendron Congo hybrids include Imperial Red, Black Cardinal, Red Emerald, Moonlight, and Autumn. These hybrids are becoming more common, but still fairly rare—so if you find a Red Congo, be sure to grab it!
Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also easy to grow. I have a care video available, which is linked below, along with other related videos. This spotlight aims to show how gorgeous this plant can be and what a wonderful addition it is to your indoor garden.
You’ll notice that the Red Congo also has aerial roots, much like the Monstera deliciosa. These roots are a lovely burgundy color and add decorative value to the plant. It naturally grows as an understory plant on the jungle floor in South America, spreading outward rather than climbing.
Indoors, the Red Congo can grow up to four feet tall, making a dramatic statement. The specimen I’m showcasing here is already close to two feet tall. It’s a self-heading plant, which means it grows from a single stem—so it’s important to keep that central growth point healthy.
The plant has a striking combination of glossy green and burgundy foliage. It grows at a medium to slow rate, so it won’t fill up a space too quickly—but it will look fantastic along the way. Mature Red Congos can produce slightly fragrant flowers in pink, purple, red, green, or white, though flowering indoors is rare. If yours does flower indoors, it’s a sign you’re doing an excellent job!
Even without flowers, the foliage alone makes this plant well worth growing. Thanks for stopping by! Please comment with any indoor gardening tutorials you’d like to see, and remember to like, comment, subscribe, and share this video. Click the bell to be notified of future video releases.
