Today, we are doing a plant care video on the Chinese Money Plant, botanically known as Pilea peperomioides. This plant is also called the Friendship Plant because of its unique history. I also have a video on that if you’d like to learn more.

This gorgeous plant is known for its round leaves—an uncommon leaf shape in nature. The perfectly circular foliage has inspired common names like Money Plant, UFO Plant, and Pancake Plant.

Lighting

The Chinese Money Plant thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid dark areas, as the plant will not thrive and may become leggy with fewer leaves. Excessively dark conditions make the plant more vulnerable to pests and disease.

Keep the plant out of intense direct sun, especially in west- or south-facing windows. If placement in these areas is necessary, set it back from the window or use sheer curtains.

If your space is dim, you will need full-spectrum grow lighting. Many excellent options exist, and I have provided links below.

Soil

Use a rich yet well-draining organic potting mix that is peat- or coco-coir-based. These materials retain moisture without becoming soggy. Add drainage agents such as perlite to prevent waterlogged soil, which can cause root rot.

Watering

The Chinese Money Plant is a moderate drinker. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and never allow the pot to sit in standing water.
Using a moisture meter, water when the soil reads around 4—before it becomes dry.

Always water with warm to tepid water, never cold.

Temperature & Humidity

Average home temperatures are ideal, generally between 65°F and 75°F. Avoid temperatures below 50°F, as the plant will struggle at that level. Keep it away from drafts.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly from spring through early fall using an organic, low-NPK fertilizer (5-5-5 or lower). Avoid chemical fertilizers, as they can burn roots and lead to salt buildup and root rot.

When fertilizing:

  1. Water first.

  2. Fertilize.

  3. Water again.

If using granular fertilizer, apply it at the root zone.

Potting & Repotting

Pilea peperomioides grows quickly when well cared for, so expect to repot about once a year. Only repot when needed.

Use the 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot ratio to prevent root rot. The plant tolerates ceramic, plastic, or terracotta pots. Remember that terracotta dries out more quickly, so watering frequency increases.

Pests & Diseases

Generally pest-free, but occasionally may attract:

  • Mealybugs

  • Scale

  • Spider mites

Treat with isopropyl alcohol for mealybugs, and neem oil for scale and spider mites.

Final Tip

As always, talk to your plant—encouragement helps growth!
