How do you keep spike moss alive indoors?
The key to keeping spike moss healthy is humidity. If you want your spike moss to thrive, I highly recommend growing it in a terrarium.
I have a terrarium here with spike moss growing inside, and it absolutely loves this environment. A terrarium creates the consistently high humidity that spike moss needs to stay lush and healthy.
In most homes, it’s nearly impossible to provide enough humidity without an enclosed environment. Unless you live in a naturally humid climate, you’ll likely need a terrarium or even an aquarium setup to successfully grow spike moss indoors.
The goal is to keep both the soil and the surrounding air consistently moist. When humidity levels are too low, spike moss tends to shrivel up and decline.
Most homes maintain humidity levels around 45% to 55%, but spike moss prefers significantly higher humidity. While misting, humidity trays, and other humidifying methods may help some houseplants, they generally aren’t sufficient for spike moss.
That’s why a terrarium is the best solution.
When I remove the lid, you can immediately see the moisture collecting inside the glass, showing just how humid the environment is.
Inside this terrarium, you’ll also notice a polka dot plant that I’ve pruned into the shape of a small tree. Around it, I’ve placed decorative dried moss.
The spike moss itself is thriving. It grows so well in these conditions that I occasionally prune it to keep it from becoming overgrown and spilling over the edges of the terrarium.
One of the benefits of growing spike moss in a terrarium is that you won’t need to water it very often because the enclosed environment retains moisture so well. You should still check the soil periodically, but maintenance is minimal.
Many terrariums include small ventilation holes that allow a little airflow. This is important because some air circulation helps prevent mold and other moisture-related problems.
