Hello and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where we teach you all about gardening in the great indoors. If you’d like to support our show, please use our Amazon affiliate link below.
Today, I am doing a plant care video on the Polka Dot Plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya). I love this plant! It’s easy to grow indoors and works beautifully in terrariums, fairy gardens, elf gardens, and mermaid gardens. I have videos on many of those as part of my terrarium series.
This plant features beautiful color combinations, and its variegation gives the illusion of a flower garden indoors. While it isn’t actually flowering, it offers that same colorful charm. It also produces a small spray of flowers during its growth cycle.
These plants are from the “Splash” hybrid line. This one is the White Splash variation, and here we also have the Pink Splash. You can see why it’s called the Polka Dot Plant—the foliage truly looks polka-dotted.
The plant is native to Madagascar and grows more quickly in its natural climate, but it still performs very well indoors and offers vibrant color to your indoor garden.
## Lighting
Provide bright, indirect light for best color and to keep the plant from becoming leggy. In low light, the plant will stretch toward the light and become tall, lanky, and unattractive.
Good locations include near an east-facing window or a southern window with filtered light. Avoid west-facing windows, which may scorch the delicate foliage. Full-spectrum lighting is also excellent for these plants, helping maintain vibrant color and healthy foliage.
## Watering
Polka Dot Plants are tropical and wilt quickly if under-watered. The good news is that they often bounce back if watered promptly, although they may lose a few leaves.
Always water with warm or tepid water—never cold. These plants especially dislike cold water.
## Fertilizing
Fertilize monthly, except in December and January when growth naturally slows. Organic fertilizers are recommended to avoid burning the plant’s delicate roots. My Green Gourmet Houseplant Food works well, as do organic liquids following package directions.
## Humidity & Temperature
These plants love humidity. Ideal humidity is 45–65%, and temperatures should be between 65–85°F.
A hygrometer is an excellent tool to monitor your environment. Plants also humidify each other, making groupings beneficial. Humidity trays and occasional misting help as well.
## Soil
Use a rich, well-draining soil with peat or coir for moisture retention, and perlite or pumice for drainage. If your soil holds too much water, add pumice or perlite to balance it.
## Pruning
Regular pruning is essential, even with bright light. Growth can become lanky, so pinch or prune back frequently—weekly in warm months, every 2–4 weeks during slower growth.
Pinch just above a node to encourage fuller, bushier growth.
These simple care routines will keep your Polka Dot Plant vibrant, healthy, and a standout in your indoor garden.
