Today, I’m talking about one of my favorite plants: the Prayer Plant, botanically known as Maranta leuconeura. This plant “performs” for you by folding its leaves into a prayer-like position at night. As dusk settles, the leaves slowly close, creating a fascinating visual display. Sometimes you can even hear a soft rustling sound when the leaves move.
The Prayer Plant is native to Brazil and is known for its beautiful foliage. Its leaves come in a variety of patterns—some with blotching, some with brushstroke-like markings, and others with circular patterns and vivid color tones. In their native habitat, prayer plants grow 12–15 inches tall, and with excellent care indoors, they can reach close to that size. If your plant grows larger over time, that’s a sign it’s very happy.
Lighting Requirements
Prayer plants thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate low light but will grow best with more brightness. If your home is dim, supplement with full-spectrum lighting. Without enough light, foliage becomes dull and growth slows. They should be kept out of direct sunlight, which can cause washed-out leaves, sunburn, or dark brown patches. Eastern windows or areas a few feet from a southern window work well.
Watering Needs
Water the plant so the soil stays slightly moist but never soggy. Avoid letting it dry out completely. On a moisture meter, water when the soil reads around 4–5. Never use cold water—always water with warm or room-temperature water, as cold water can shock the roots and cause dieback or root rot.
Fertilizing
Feed your prayer plant regularly with a well-balanced organic fertilizer designed for foliage or indoor plants, such as the Green Gourmet House Plant Food. Fertilize from March through September. Avoid fertilizing in winter, as the plant needs a rest period.
Humidity Requirements
Prayer plants love high humidity. If you live in a dry area or use heating or air conditioning frequently, increase humidity by using a humidity tray or grouping plants together. Grouping plants raises humidity naturally as they transpire. Misting can help short-term, especially if the plant is near your bed or office desk, but use a fine mister.
Pests and Diseases
Prayer plants occasionally suffer from mealybugs, which look like white cottony masses. Treat them with isopropyl alcohol followed by a rinse. Spider mites may occur in dry conditions, so maintaining humidity helps prevent them.
