Assessing the Spider Plant
This little plant, which I’ll call Lucy, has crispy ends and looks a bit draggled. Spider plants are generally easy to grow, but they are particular about soil moisture and nutrients. The yellowing or pale leaves indicate a nitrogen deficiency, which we will correct with some green gourmet houseplant food.
This fertilizer contains microscopic fungi (mycorrhizae) that attach to roots and help plants absorb nutrients and water more effectively. It also contains compost and natural growth hormones, perfect for reviving a stressed plant.
Repotting for Revival
One of the best steps to revive a plant is repotting. Choose a pot that is slightly smaller than the current one for compromised plants, because a reduced root mass cannot handle too much soil. Water the plant about 20 minutes before repotting to help roots absorb moisture.
Preparing the Soil
Shake off old soil, remove dead leaves, and provide fresh soil that drains well but retains moisture. I use Pro-Mix BX mixed with pumice (a lightweight lava rock that improves drainage) for this spider plant. Mix in some fertilizer as per package instructions.
Planting and Finishing Touches
Place the plant so the crown is just below the soil surface.
Firm the soil to remove air pockets.
Prune any dead or damaged leaves to prevent pests and improve appearance.
Water with tepid water to help settle the soil.
Lucy should now be happy in her new soil, and with proper care, she will recover and grow vigorously.

Spider Plant Revival FAQ
Why does my spider plant have crispy ends?
Crispy ends usually indicate a lack of moisture or a nutrient deficiency, commonly nitrogen. Adjust watering and fertilize to correct it.
How can I revive a spider plant?
Repot the plant in fresh soil, prune dead leaves, provide adequate water, and use a gentle fertilizer with nutrients and growth-stimulating compounds.
What type of soil is best for a spider plant?
Use a well-draining soil that retains some moisture. A mix of Pro-Mix BX with pumice provides good drainage and nutrient retention.
Should I water before or after repotting?
Water the plant about 20 minutes before repotting to hydrate roots, then water again after placing it in fresh soil to settle the plant.
How do I choose the right pot size for a stressed spider plant?
Choose a pot slightly smaller than the current one. Compromised plants often have reduced root mass and cannot handle too much soil.
What fertilizer is recommended for reviving spider plants?
Use a gentle, nutrient-rich fertilizer with micro-fungi or growth hormones, such as the Green Gourmet houseplant food.
