This is actually an unripened flower spike from a Split Leaf Philodendron (Monstera deliciosa). The reason it’s called deliciosa is because, although it looks unusual, this fruit is extremely tasty when fully ripe.
Interestingly, this fruit takes an entire year to ripen on the plant. I first noticed this spike on September 4th, 2013, and after researching, I learned that it takes about a year for the fruit to mature. Sure enough, the following September 4th, the fruit was ripe and easily came off the spike.
How to Tell When a Monstera Fruit is Ripe
The fruit comes off easily from the spike.
If eaten before ripening, it can burn your mouth and throat.
Once ripe, it tastes like a cross between mango, pineapple, and banana, with strong floral undertones.
