Today, I’m going to talk to you about the Arrowhead plant—one of my favorites. This video is part of my monthly series focusing on specific houseplants I love and explaining why.

The Arrowhead plant, botanically known as Syngonium podophyllum, is a beautiful plant that can grow as a vine. I have several examples here, and you can see how nicely they trail. Their arrow-shaped leaves are often variegated. Some varieties show blush pink or reddish tones, while others feature lime-green leaves with darker veins. There’s a wide and stunning color range with this plant.

Native to Latin America, the Arrowhead plant climbs high into the jungle canopy in its natural habitat. Indoors, young plants start upright, then begin to droop and vine as they mature. This is helpful to consider when choosing how to place them in your home.

Lighting

The Arrowhead plant prefers medium light. It can tolerate lower light, but slow growth and very dark leaves indicate it needs more light. Keep it a few feet from a window to avoid leaf burn in summer or frost burn in winter, as the leaves are quite thin.

Watering

Because of its thin leaves, the soil should remain slightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top ½–1 inch of soil has dried. Although tropical, it’s forgiving—if you forget to water briefly, it usually bounces back without severe damage.

Fertilizing

Arrowhead plants don’t require heavy feeding. I use my Green Gourmet Houseplant Food every 6–12 weeks. Fast-growing tropical vines often thrive with fewer nutrients, but they still benefit from occasional fertilization. Healthy leaves should look glossy and vibrant.

Humidity

This plant appreciates extra humidity but generally tolerates average indoor conditions. In dry climates or during winter heating months, a humidity tray can help. Tip browning may occur if humidity is too low or if your tap water contains minerals like fluoride.

Pests

The main pest to watch for is mealybugs—small white cottony insects that suck plant juices. They’re not especially drawn to Arrowhead plants but may migrate if nearby plants are infested.

Placement & Growth Habit

Arrowhead plants grow best a few feet from southern or eastern windows, or near a northern window with care during cold months. Because it vines, regular pinching encourages bushier growth. You can also train it up a trellis using plant ties, creating a gorgeous decorative accent.

This is a long-lived plant—I’ve kept some for over 15 years. Whether upright or trailing, it makes a hardy, reliable, and beautiful indoor plant.
