Today, I’m going to talk about something important: answering the question, can you really grow plants in dark rooms and dark spaces?
You often see claims that you can grow certain plants in dark spaces, but realistically, it doesn’t work very well. Low light, yes — dark spaces, no.
Plants need some natural light to survive. In extremely dark corners with very little natural light, it’s very difficult for plants to thrive.
If they don’t get enough light, plants might sit there without growing. They may start losing leaves, especially lower leaves first. You’ll notice the top leaves staying longer because they are closer to available light.

Rather than letting your plants suffer, use Full Spectrum Lighting. This way, plants get the light they need to survive and grow properly.

Some low light plants that do well with additional Full Spectrum Lighting include:

  • Peace Lily

  • Pothos (especially green varieties without variegation)

  • Arrowhead Plant

  • Dracaenas

  • Sansevieria (Snake Plant)

While these plants can tolerate low light, they still need some light. Full Spectrum Lighting can make a big difference.
I understand the desire to decorate dark spaces with plants — I have dark areas in my own home too! However, unless you provide supplemental light, the plants won’t thrive.

If you prefer flowering plants, African Violets are another good option for lower light conditions, especially under Full Spectrum Lighting. Northern exposure homes, which tend to have less sunlight, can successfully grow African Violets with the right lighting setup.

Can you grow plants in a closet or completely dark area?
Only if you install a lighting system! Otherwise, choose your plants carefully and always use Full Spectrum Lighting to simulate daylight.
There are many bulb options available today that fit standard fixtures and provide the full light spectrum plants need.

Can plants survive in completely dark spaces?

No, plants cannot survive in completely dark spaces. They require at least some light to live and grow. Without light, plants may lose leaves and eventually decline.

What are some good low light plants for indoors?

Good low light plants include Peace Lily, green Pothos, Arrowhead Plant, Dracaenas, and Sansevieria. These plants tolerate low light but still require some illumination.

How can I successfully grow plants in dark rooms?

Use Full Spectrum Lighting to simulate daylight. This provides the necessary light plants need to thrive in otherwise dark environments.

Can African Violets grow in low light conditions?

Yes, African Violets can grow well in lower light areas, especially when supplemented with Full Spectrum Lighting. They can even bloom indoors with proper care.

What are symptoms of plants not getting enough light?
