Today, we have a plant spotlight for the beautiful Rex Begonia, botanically known as Begonia Rex Cultorum. This spotlight will help you see if you would like to add it to your indoor garden, which I highly recommend. A full care video is linked below for detailed guidance.

Begonia Rex Cultorum is a stunning houseplant known for its vibrant, colorful foliage. It is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of eastern Asia, particularly India and southern China. This species has been extensively hybridized, resulting in a wide array of cultivars with diverse leaf patterns and colors.

The cultivar featured here is Miami Storm, though there are many others with striking variations. The most remarkable feature of Rex Begonia is its large, intricately patterned leaves, often said to mimic shades of precious metals and gems, including silver, platinum, gold, ruby, topaz, emerald, and amethyst.

Leaves generally have contrasting veins and borders, and their texture can range from smooth to slightly fuzzy. While Rex Begonia is usually grown for its foliage, it also produces delicate pink flowers, which tend to sit tucked among the leaves. Flowering adds a delightful touch to this already spectacular plant.

Historically, the original Rex Begonia was brought from the Himalayan foothills of India in 1856—by accident, mixed in with a collection of orchids. Luckily for plant lovers, this happy mistake allows us to enjoy such a long-standing and beautiful indoor plant today.

This plant offers the best of both worlds: stunning foliage and charming flowers, making it a must-have for any indoor plant collection.
