If you really don’t like brown leaf tips, it’s important to know which houseplants are more prone to them. Some plants are simply more susceptible, and understanding this helps you take steps to prevent those unsightly tips. I also have several videos on preventing brown leaf tips, which I will link below along with any other related videos mentioned here.
Let’s go over the plants that are especially prone to brown leaf tips:
1. Dracaena Family
Plants in the Dracaena family, especially those with strap-like foliage such as the corn plant, are well-known for developing brown tips. Even Dracaena species with thinner leaves show this issue. While brown tips can be trimmed for aesthetic reasons (I have videos on how to do this), it’s helpful to know these plants are particularly vulnerable.
2. Spider Plant
Spider plants are another common offender. For example, Lucy—featured in my Revival Series—does occasionally develop brown leaf tips, though not excessively.
3. Peace Lily
Peace lilies often get brown leaf tips just at the very edges. This is quite typical and usually not a sign of serious trouble.
4. Calathea
Calatheas, especially those with rounder leaves, tend to brown at the tips or even all the way around the leaf edges. In the late afternoon, Calatheas begin to fold up their leaves like prayer plants, so leaf edges may be less visible, but browning is common.
5. Prayer Plant
Prayer plants also fall into the category of plants susceptible to brown leaf tips.
Now, let’s briefly review the top reasons for brown leaf tips:
Poor Water Quality: Fluoride, chlorine, heavy metals, and salts in tap water can all contribute.
Low Humidity: One of the biggest culprits behind brown tips.
Inconsistent Watering: Fluctuations between overwatering and underwatering.
Chemical Fertilizer Overuse: A common yet often overlooked cause. I recommend using organic fertilizers, and I discuss this in several of my videos.
As mentioned, you can trim off brown leaf tips for cosmetic purposes—I’ll link videos on how to do this as well.
