How and Why to Foliar Feed Houseplants

Find out how to use foliar feeding on your houseplants. When you feed houseplants through their leaves, this allows them to soak up fertilizer more rapidly than through the soil. This video explains how to make foliar fertilizer for houseplants, and how to apply it, including the importance of applying a sticker/spreading agent (surfactant).

Today, we’re going to talk about foliar feeding—feeding your plants through their leaves rather than their roots.

Why would you do this? There are several reasons. One is to get nutrients to the plant quickly. When you foliar feed, nutrients are absorbed through the stomata on the leaves—primarily the underside, but also on top. This method allows for rapid nutrient absorption, compared to root feeding, which can take up to two weeks for the fertilizer to convert into a form the roots can use.

Foliar feeding is especially helpful for plants with nutrient deficiencies, such as chlorosis—a condition common in citrus, where the leaf veins remain dark but the surrounding leaf tissue is pale.

Another good time to foliar feed is when reviving a plant from root rot. If the plant is showing new growth but you want to avoid overwatering the soil, foliar feeding is an excellent way to provide nutrients without risking further root damage. Just make sure to only feed once the plant is actively growing again.

For this demonstration, I’ll be foliar feeding my revived Dieffenbachia named Humphrey. I’m using a combination of an indoor liquid fertilizer and a little humic acid—a highly beneficial additive for houseplants. I’ve also added a small amount of surfactant, sometimes called a “spreader sticker.” This helps the fertilizer stick to the leaves so it doesn’t just run off or evaporate.

Make sure to follow package directions, and you can mix your solution in a gallon container before transferring it to a spray bottle. Use a fine mist spray to cover both the tops and undersides of leaves—especially the undersides, where most stomata are located. Shake well before spraying.

Not only does this method provide nutrients, but it also mists the plant, offering extra humidity. Just don’t overdo it.

Important note: Foliar feeding should not replace soil feeding. Roots need nutrients from soil to support overall plant health. Use foliar feeding as a supplement, especially when plants show signs of stress or when you need a quick nutrient boost.

Foliar Feeding FAQ

What is foliar feeding?

Foliar feeding is the process of applying liquid fertilizer directly to a plant’s leaves, allowing nutrients to be absorbed through the stomata for quick uptake.

When should I use foliar feeding?

Use foliar feeding when your plant needs a quick nutrient boost, is showing signs of nutrient deficiency, or is recovering from root rot but showing new growth.

How do I apply foliar fertilizer correctly?

Spray a fine mist of diluted liquid fertilizer on both the top and underside of the leaves. Use a surfactant to help the solution stick to the foliage.

Can I use any liquid fertilizer for foliar feeding?

Many liquid fertilizers can be used for foliar feeding, even if not labeled for it. Always dilute appropriately and check product guidelines before applying.

Should foliar feeding replace soil fertilizing?

No, foliar feeding is a supplement to soil fertilization. Healthy roots are essential for plant growth, so continue feeding the soil regularly as well.
