Today’s video is inspired by a viewer named Am, who recently asked: “Would you mind explaining how, where, and when to prune the Red Luna?” This refers to the Peperomia caperata ‘Red Luna’, a lovely plant native to Brazil.

I have additional care videos on peperomias, which I’ll link below, but today we’re going to dive specifically into how to prune this plant properly.

🌿 General Houseplant Pruning Tips

When pruning houseplants, never remove more than one-third of the plant’s foliage at a time. Removing too much can shock the plant or make it too small for its pot, potentially leading to root rot. So always prune carefully and conservatively.

🌱 When to Prune

The best time to prune is during the plant’s active growing season—typically late winter through mid-summer. Avoid pruning in the winter months unless absolutely necessary. In this video, pruning is demonstrated in February in Southern California, where the growing season begins earlier due to the warmer climate.

✂️ How and Where to Prune Red Luna

The Red Luna grows from a central crown—similar to African violets. All new growth emerges from this crown, and older leaves fan out around it. To encourage healthy new growth, occasional pruning is necessary.

  1. Start by removing dead foliage. These are usually located on the outer edge of the plant. You can gently tug them off or use clean, sharp pruners.

  2. Cut leaves at the base, near but not into the crown, to avoid damaging the plant.

  3. Remove old, faded, or yellowing leaves. This stimulates new growth in the crown and maintains a rounded shape.

  4. Look for crossing leaves or crowding—remove one of the overlapping leaves to avoid fungal issues and improve airflow.

  5. Go slowly and check often. Take your time. Pruning is a delicate process—once a leaf is cut, it’s gone for good.

🪴 Maintenance and Aesthetic Considerations

While pruning, aim to maintain a symmetrical shape. Remove any leaves sticking out or throwing off the plant’s balance. If you accidentally knock off a leaf, it’s okay—sometimes that indicates the leaf was ready to go.

Remember: Pruning improves both appearance and plant health. You can revisit the plant after a few weeks for a touch-up to continue shaping it nicely.

Red Luna Peperomia Pruning FAQ

When is the best time to prune a Red Luna Peperomia?

The ideal time to prune is during the plant’s active growing season—late winter to mid-summer. Avoid heavy pruning during winter months.

How much of the Red Luna should I prune at once?

Never remove more than one-third of the plant’s foliage at one time to prevent shock and potential root rot.

Where do I cut when pruning the Red Luna?

Cut stems at the base of the plant, near but not into the crown. Avoid damaging the crown, as it’s the source of new growth.

What leaves should I prune?

Remove dead, yellowing, or faded leaves, as well as any that are crowding or crossing over other leaves. This promotes better air circulation and growth.
