Today’s episode is another installment of my series: “My Favorite Thing About…” In this episode, I’m excited to share my favorite thing about coleus!

I absolutely love coleus. In fact, coleus was the first plant I ever grew when I was seven years old. I bought it at a drugstore, and that’s how my love for houseplants began. That’s my little backstory on coleus.

I’ve talked about this plant before, especially in my coleus care video (linked below), along with other related videos.

Aside from being my first plant love, what I really adore is that you can grow coleus from seed. It’s so exciting to grow them this way! I wish I had known that when I was younger, because I originally propagated them from cuttings, which are also easy to do. But several years ago, I discovered you can actually plant them from seed—and that was a game-changer.

The gorgeous coleus plant I’m showing today was grown from seed, and you can see how big and tree-like it has become. Some coleus are smaller, but if you prune them, they’ll become bushier.

What’s also exciting is that the flowers can produce seeds. Let the flower stalks mature and turn brown, then you can harvest those seeds and plant them.

So yes—my favorite thing about coleus is that you can grow them from seed. It’s hard to pick just one thing for this series, but that discovery has been the most exciting for me in recent years.

Let me know your favorite thing about coleus in the comments below! Also, feel free to suggest other plants you’d like me to feature. If I haven’t already covered them, I’d love to add them to the Houseplant Spotlight playlist, which includes this series.
