So—what do I love about Fittonia? This may sound a little cliché, but my favorite thing is the reason behind its nickname, “nerve plant.” The leaves of Fittonia resemble the human nervous system, which is how it earned that name.
It’s not called the nerve plant because it’s “nervy,” but because it looks like anatomical drawings of the nervous system. I’m showing a picture right now of the human nervous system so you can see the resemblance—it’s actually quite striking!
I just think that’s such a cool and unique feature of this plant. There aren’t many plants that visually resemble the human nervous system, so it’s fun to share that fact when someone asks why it’s called a nerve plant.
