Today we have a plant care video on this lovely Neon Pothos (botanical name: Epipremnum ‘Neon’). This striking plant has beautiful neon green leaves that stand out compared to the deeper green of regular pothos. Some varieties have splotches, but this one usually displays a uniform shade of vivid, glowing green.
It features the standard heart-shaped leaves and vining growth habit typical of pothos. Let’s go over how to keep this eye-catching beauty happy and healthy indoors.
Lighting
Neon pothos adapts to a wide range of lighting conditions. However, for best results and to maintain its vibrant color, provide bright, indirect light. Medium to medium-bright light is ideal. In lower light, the leaves may darken and the plant may become leggy.
This plant also thrives under full-spectrum lighting, as demonstrated by this one, which is growing happily under grow lights in a room with some indirect light.
Watering
Water when the soil is nearly dry. Aim for around a 4 or nudging into 3 on a moisture meter. For smaller pots, water when the top inch of soil is dry. For larger pots, wait until the top 1.5 to 2 inches are dry. Overwatering can cause root rot.
Fertilizing
Fertilizing isn’t essential, but it helps encourage healthier and faster growth. Use an organic houseplant fertilizer every 2–3 months from spring through fall. Avoid fertilizing during winter.
Humidity
Neon pothos handles average to low humidity well and also thrives in high humidity if air circulation is good. Good airflow prevents root rot and fungal issues.
Temperature
This plant is not fussy about temperature. It thrives between 55°F to 90°F, making it ideal for most indoor environments.
Repotting
Neon pothos prefers being slightly rootbound. Only repot when it exceeds a 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot ratio (or up to 3/4 plant to 1/4 pot). Never overpot, as this can lead to root rot or stunted growth. Repot only one pot size up, and consider reusing the same pot with fresh soil if appropriate. Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix.
Pruning
Neon pothos can become leggy over time or if it lacks light. Prune back to just below a leaf node to encourage bushier growth. Use sharp pruning shears to prevent disease and promote strong regrowth.
Pests and Diseases
Watch out for mealybugs, which like to hide in leaf ridges and stem indentations. Treat infestations with 70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol. Spray weekly for a month, then monitor monthly even if no bugs are visible. This keeps the plant healthy and pest-free.
