Today, we’re featuring a plant care video on Philodendron Birkin. There are many philodendron species for indoor growing, but the Birkin is a particularly rare and exciting one. It’s a mutation of the hybrid Philodendron Rojo Congo, known for its creamy white or yellow pinstripe variegation on green foliage. As shown here, some leaves exhibit both white and green striping, which is especially stunning. The Rojo Congo, by comparison, has large, solid-colored leaves that mature into burgundy green shades.

Though once rare, Philodendron Birkin is now more accessible and makes an excellent compact, slow-growing houseplant. It has a self-supporting upright growth habit and a thick trunk, unlike trailing relatives such as Philodendron scandens (the heartleaf philodendron). It grows proportionally—both upward and outward—making it ideal for indoor spaces.

🌞 Lighting

Philodendron Birkin thrives in medium to medium-bright indirect light. An east or south-facing window is ideal, especially if it receives morning sun. Too little light can cause loss of variegation, while too much sun can scorch the leaves. Keep it away from direct, intense sun, especially from west- or south-facing windows. It also does well under full-spectrum grow lights.

To maintain even growth, rotate the plant every month if it’s near a window. If under grow lights, rotation may not be necessary.

💧 Watering

Avoid overwatering—one of the biggest threats to this plant. Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry out before watering. Use a moisture meter and water when it reads at 4. Make sure it never sits in a saucer of water. Signs of overwatering include mushy stems and crown, while yellowing leaves can indicate both under- or overwatering. Brown leaf tips may suggest under-watering or low humidity.

If it dries out completely, don’t worry—just give it a thorough soaking and let it drain well.

🌿 Fertilizing

Fertilize with a balanced organic houseplant fertilizer at half strength every two months during the growing season (spring through fall). Avoid fertilizing in winter. Overfertilizing can cause fertilizer burn, which results in curling and browning leaves. Organic fertilizers are less likely to burn and support healthy growth and variegation.

🪴 Soil

Use a well-draining yet moisture-retentive soil that holds both water and nutrients. Avoid heavy, compacted soils that can lead to root rot. You can find suitable mixes or create your own. Links are available below the video for recommended soils.

💦 Humidity

Being tropical, Philodendron Birkin enjoys 50% to 65% humidity. Bathrooms with natural light work well, or you can use a humidifier, pebble tray, misting, or group the plant with others. Avoid drafty areas and air vents, which lower humidity. Brown tips and leaf edges usually point to low humidity levels.
