Today we have a plant care video for this lovely Rex Begonia (botanically Begonia Rex Cultorum). It is a stunning houseplant known for its vibrant, colorful foliage. This species is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of eastern Asia, particularly India and southern China.

This species has been extensively hybridized, resulting in a wide array of cultivars with diverse leaf patterns and colors. The cultivar featured here is called Miami Storm—a very pretty plant with intricate and vibrant leaves.

The most striking feature of Rex Begonia is its large, patterned leaves, which can display colors including reddish-pink, green, silver, and purple. Leaves may be smooth to slightly fuzzy, adding to its visual appeal. The plant generally grows low and compact in a mounded form, but can reach a substantial size. It also produces lovely blooms, though most grow it for its foliage.

Lighting

  • Provide bright, indirect light.

  • Place 2–3 feet away from a southern-facing window or in front of an eastern window until mid-day.

  • Full spectrum lighting works well for 14–16 hours a day, especially in fall and winter.

Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Water when the top inch of soil dries. Use a moisture meter reading 4 as a guide.

  • Use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater to prevent brown leaf tips.

  • Signs of underwatering: curly or wilting leaves, dry edges.

  • Signs of overwatering: mushy stems, yellowing leaves, fungal growth.

Fertilizing

  • Feed monthly from spring through early fall with a well-balanced organic fertilizer for houseplants.

Humidity

  • Rex Begonias thrive in 50–80% humidity.

  • Increase humidity using pebble trays, misting, humidifiers, or grouping plants.

  • Signs of low humidity: crispy, curling leaves, slowed growth, or loss of vibrancy.

Temperature

  • Ideal: 60–75°F. Can tolerate up to 80°F briefly.

  • Avoid temperatures below 60°F or drastic fluctuations.

  • Keep away from heating or AC vents to prevent drying.

Repotting

  • Use wide, shallow pots with excellent drainage.

  • Ideal soil: peat moss, perlite or pumice, vermiculite, compost, and other organic nutrients.

Pruning

  • Remove dead or dying foliage.

  • Pinch off spent flowers.

Pests & Diseases

  • Overwatering can cause fungal infections, root rot, and mushy stems.

  • Reduce watering if fungal issues arise.

Propagation

  • Propagate by leaf/stem cuttings or rhizome division in spring and early summer.

  • Keep cuttings humid under a humidity dome.
