In this video, I show you exactly how to remove spent African violet flowers using a simple pinch method (no pruners needed). This shows a close-up view so you can clearly see where to pinch and how to pull the bloom stem cleanly. Deadheading (removing old blooms) helps redirect energy and makes room for new flowers, so your African violet can keep blooming strong. If you watched my earlier video and wanted a closer view, this one is for you.

Today, I’m going to show you how to remove spent African violet flowers, and I’ll demonstrate this close up so you can clearly see where to pinch out the flowers.
African violet flowers have very soft stems, so while you can use pruners, the easiest method is simply pinching them out with your fingers. I’m going to remove the flowers that are spent and leave the ones that are still healthy and blooming.
When removing a spent bloom, it’s important to go all the way down to the base of the plant. Pinch the stem cleanly at the base, being careful not to damage the nearby leaf stems. Pinching too high leaves leftover stem pieces, which can rot, fall off later, and slow down new leaf growth or re-flowering.
You want a clean, close pinch—right at the base—without damaging surrounding leaves. Once removed, the stem will be fairly long, which shows you reached the correct spot.
Removing old blooms helps clean up the plant, improves its appearance, and most importantly, allows the plant to redirect energy into new blooms and buds. You may even notice brand-new blooms forming soon after.
African violets can bloom year-round indoors, even in winter. It’s January right now, and this plant is actively blooming. I also have a full playlist on African violet care linked below.
