Welcome to healthyhouseplants.com, where I teach you all about gardening in the great indoors. If you’d like to support the show, check out the description box below for the many ways to do that.
Today, we’re talking about Dracaena marginata ‘Kiwi’, also called the Kiwi Dracaena or Kiwi Dragon Tree. I’ll show you how to keep this bright, easy-care plant healthy and happy in your indoor garden.
Kiwi Dracaena is a colorful cultivar of the Madagascar dragon tree and, as its name suggests, it’s native to Madagascar. It features slender, upright canes topped with narrow, arching leaves marked by bold green and yellow striping, sometimes with hints of pink.
This plant can reach 3 to 5 feet tall over time while staying narrow and space-efficient, making it a striking statement plant without taking up much room.
Flowering indoors is rare, but mature plants may occasionally produce small, pale blooms. If yours flowers indoors, it’s a sign the plant is extremely happy.
Lighting
Kiwi Dracaena does best in bright, indirect light, but it adapts well to medium light. Place it near an east-facing window or several feet back from a west-facing window. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while proper light keeps the variegation vibrant. Rotate the plant regularly for even growth.
Watering
Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings. Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 inches of soil feel dry. This is typically every 7–14 days, and less often in winter. The plant tolerates slight dryness, but frequent drought can cause brown leaf tips.
Brown tips may also be caused by:
Low humidity
Salt buildup from fertilizers
Tap water additives like chlorine or fluoride
Use warm water and choose distilled, filtered, reverse-osmosmosis, or rainwater when possible. Organic fertilizers help prevent salt buildup.
Fertilizing
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring through early fall using a balanced organic houseplant fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.
Humidity
Average household humidity is fine, but levels below 40% may cause stress and brown tips. Aim for 45% or higher. Mist occasionally, group plants, or use a pebble tray if needed.
Temperature
This plant prefers temperatures between 60–75°F and tolerates up to 85°F. Avoid temperatures below 50°F and keep it away from drafts and heating or cooling vents.
Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years or when roots crowd the pot. Use a container one size larger with drainage holes and a well-draining soil mix, such as potting soil blended with perlite.
Pruning
Pruning isn’t required but helps control height and shape. Cut above a stem node with clean pruners. New growth will emerge below the cut, and the top cutting can be rooted to create a new plant.
Pests and Diseases
Kiwi Dracaena is susceptible to mealybugs, which can be treated with isopropyl alcohol and neem oil. Overwatering may cause root rot, indicated by soggy soil and yellowing leaves.
Propagation
The easiest method is top-cut propagation. Take a cutting with sterile pruners and place it in a moist rooting medium. The parent plant will typically sprout new growth below the cut.
Pet Safety
Dracaena marginata ‘Kiwi’ is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
